From 2024, HIIA will enter a new period of strategic research, and researchers will continue their work in five new research groups. The goal of the transformation is to ensure that research projects are even more closely linked to Hungarian foreign policy priorities.

Center for a Strong Europe

Hungary supports the idea of a European Union founded on cooperation among independent and sovereign nation-states. The Strong Europe Research Group focuses on EU enlargement, security policy, and competitiveness. From the perspective of Hungarian foreign policy, it examines European countries as well as the key challenges affecting the continent as a whole.

Emerging Challenges Center

New challenges facing global politics—from terrorism and migration to emerging cultural trends—often affect Hungary in unpredictable ways. The New Types of Challenges Research Group explores and analyses these phenomena. Its aim is to broaden Hungary’s geopolitical horizon and help both the Hungarian public and decision-makers navigate this complex landscape of new challenges.

Secure Neighborhood Center

The Secure Neighborhood Center is dedicated to fostering regional stability and security in the complex geopolitical landscape of Hungary’s Eastern neighborhood. With a keen focus on understanding the repercussions of recent conflicts in Hungary’s vicinity, as well as emphasizing cooperation initiatives, the center analyzes the development and security of this important region.

Connectivity Center

A country that isolates itself from the world, or allows others to isolate it, cannot flourish at all. Therefore, Hungary wants to be open in as many directions as possible, following the practice of connectivity rather than bloc formation—whether it comes to the economy, trade or culture. The Connectivity Center seeks answers as to why this strategy can be important and beneficial not only for Hungary but also for Europe and the world.
