The “Ask the Expert” series continued in Szeged

The University of Szeged Faculty of Law and Political Sciences hosted the second event of IFAT’s dedicated season titled “The 70-year-old history of NATO and Hungary’s 20 year-old history in the Alliance” within the framework of the ‘Ask the Expert’ foreign policy-themed discussion series. The invited panelists included Gergely Varga, PhD, senior research fellow at IFAT, Péter Stepper, PhD, researcher at Antall József Knowledge Centre, and Gábor Csizmazia, assistant research fellow at the American Studies Research Institute of the National University of Public Service. The event was moderated by András Hárs, dr.jur., assistant research fellow at the the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the University of Szeged.

The coordinators’ meeting of the Think Visegrad Platform was held on 27th May 2019. The meeting was just one day before the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Visegrad and Western Balkan countries that provided the apropo of the conference entitled ’ Cooperation between V4 and the Western Balkans – what role for think tanks?’ that directly followed the coordinator meeting.

The “Ask the Expert!” series of 2019 NATO 70/20 started in Győr

This season opening event of the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade’s “Ask the Expert!” foreign policy-themed roundtable discussion series was hosted by the Széchenyi István University in Győr on the 6th of May, 2019. The invited panelists included Tamás Péter Baranyi,PhD, chief research officer of the Antall József Knowledge Centre, Alex Etl, assistant research fellow of the National University of Public Service ’s Center for Strategic and Defense Studies, as well as senior research fellows of IFAT Gergely Varga, PhD, and Péter Wagner, PhD. The guests were introduced by Júlia Szőke,PhD, associate professor of the Department of International Studies and Communication of the Széchecnyi István University.

Iranian-American Tensions and the Chances of a New Gulf War

A year after the American withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, the relations between the United States and Iran hit a new low. The Institute of Foreign Affairs and Trade organised an expert roundtable on the 29th of May to interpret Iranian-American tensions and to discuss the chances of the eruption of a new Gulf war. The participants of the debate included Ádám Éva, researcher of the Antall József Knowledge Centre, Erzsébet N. Rózsa, senior research fellow of the World Economy Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and professor of the University of Public Service, and László Csicsmann, associate professor of the Corvinus University of Budapest. The discussion was moderated by Máté Szalai, senior researcher at the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade assistant professor at the Corvinus University of Budapest.

On 22 May, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Europe in the Global Competition – An Innovative Old Continent?”. The discussion was part of the joint event series called “Stronger Together – Mapping a New Path for the European Union" which is held by IFAT and the State Secretariat for European Union Policies and Coordination of the Prime Minister's Office.

15 years in the EU: What have we learned?

On the 20th May 2019, the 15th anniversary of the Czech Republic entering the European Union was celebrated at the Prague House in Brussels. In this context, Czech Institute for European Policy EUROPEUM organised together with the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU and the Delegation of Prague to the EU a panel discussion entitled 15 years in the EU: What have we learned?, where four representatives from the states of Visegrad group were given the floor.

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade organized a roundtable discussion entitled “Strengthening security and stability in the Western Balkans: Role of integration structures” on 14th May in order to evaluate that how Euro-Atlantic integration process enhances security and stability in the Western Balkans. The event was moderated by Anna Orosz, Research Fellow at Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Diplomatic and International Relations – America in the 19th-21st Centuries

On 13 May 2019, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade organized its most recent event, the launch of the book titled Diplomatic and International Relations - America in the 19th-21st Centuries, with the invited guests Mr. Tamás Magyarics, professor of the Department of American Studies at Eötvös Loránd University, and Mr. Sándor Gyula Nagy, deputy director of the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade. Moderator tasks were performed by Mr. András Lénárt, assistant professor at the Department of Hispanic Studies of the University of Szeged.

Insight on the current state of EU – India relations

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade hosted a public lecture by Prof. Dr. Purusottam Bhattacharya, retired professor of international relations, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, who offered critical insights on the current state of the EU – India relationship.
