Hungarian national interest in Europe: minority affairs in the European Parliament

On 8 July 2019 the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade hosted the round-table discussion, Hungarian national interest in Europe: minority affairs in the European Parliament. Among the invited guests, Balázs Brucker, political scientist, held the keynote speech, ’The national minority intergroup of the European Parliament: an old-new instrument for minority interest enformecement’, to which Zoltán Kántor, Director of the Research Institute for Hungarian Communities Abroad and Attila Kovács, Associate Research Fellow of the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade reflected and added their professional ideas. The roundtable discussion was moderated by Márton Ugrósdy, Director of the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade.

30 years of Hungarian-South Korean relations

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) and the South Korean Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) hosted the ’Korea and Hungary – 30 Years, Strategic cooperation for the future’ conference on 5 July 2019 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic contacts between the two countries. The event was opened by András Baranyi, Deputy State Secretary for Eastern Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Kyoo Sik Choe, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Hungary, Márton Ugrósdy, Director of IFAT, and Bong-Geun Jun, Acting President of IFANS KNDA.

Regional cooperation in the Western Balkans: The Berlin Process and Visegrad Group in comparison

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade hosted the promotional event of the project entitled ‘Regional cooperation in the Western Balkans: The Berlin Process and Visegrad Group in comparison’ on 28th June 2019. The project is implemented by a consortium of think tanks from the V4 and WB6, among others the SEE Think Net Network, the Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis”, the Network of the European Movement in Serbia and IFAT and is financially supported by the International Visegrad Fund.

Stronger Together: Evaluation of the Romanian EU Presidency

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade hosted a roundtable discussion titled „Stronger Together: Evaluation of the Romanian EU Presidency” on the 17th of June, 2019. The invited guests were Dr. Mihai SEBE, Expert, Project Manager, European Institute of Romania and Associate Editor, Romanian Journal of European Affairs and Dr. Oszkár ÖKRÖS, European Director, Head of Department, State Secretariat for European Union Policies and Coordination of the Prime Minister’s Office. The event was moderated by Dr. Attila KOVÁCS, Associate Research Fellow of the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Kazakhstan after the presidential election

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade hosted a roundtable discussion on the results of the presidential elections in Kazakhstan on June 18, 2019. Pál Gyene, professor at the Budapest Business School, was invited as a guest speaker, while László Vasa, senior researcher at the Institute, shared his thoughts as well. The discussion was moderated by Sándor Ackermann, analyst of the Institute.

Future of EU enlargement policy in the light of EP elections

The series of IFAT-events organised as part of the Hungarian Cultural Season in the Western Balkans continued in Skopje on 13th June 2019. The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Hungarian Embassy in Skopje organized together a conference entitled ‘Future of EU enlargement policy in the light of EP elections’. The event covered a topic of high interest as the upcoming European Council might take issues related to EU enlargement on its agenda. The conference was held the EU Info Centre.

The ”Ask the Expert!” spring series of 2019 NATO 70/20 ended in Debrecen

On May 15, 2019, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade organized the latest episode of the “Ask the Expert!" foreign policy discussion series in Debrecen, following two sessions in Győr and Szeged. Due to the double NATO-anniversary this year, the event was entitled “The 70-year-old history of NATO and Hungary’s 20-year-old history in the Alliance”, hosted by the Institute of English and American Studies of the University of Debrecen. The invited experts included associate professor Tibor Glant, PhD of the University of Debrecen and Tamás Csiki Varga, PhD, assistant research fellow of the National University of Public Service ’s Center for Strategic and Defense Studies. IFAT was represented by senior analyst Diána Szőke and our colleague Áron Szászi.

Political outlook after the EU elections

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade hosted a roundtable discussion on the results of the elections to the European Parliament on June 6, 2019. Nikolett Garai, Tamás Levente Molnár and Barnabás Szabó, all research fellows of our Institute, apart from drawing up general conclusions from the elections, gave detailed analysis of the results from the Visegrad countries, the Iberian Peninsula, the United Kingdom, Germany and Austria, and exchanged their views on the most important challenges facing the new legislature. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Máté Szalai, senior researcher of the Institute.

Joint conference of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and IFAT

The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs organised a joint conference in Jerusalem on the 3rd of June, 2019. Participants of the event entitled “In Search of Stability and Development – Common Challenges and Solutions between Central Europe and Israel” evaluated the relations between Israel and our region in the light of the results of the European Parliamentary elections.
