Visit of Hon. Wendy Morton at the Institute

On 20 May, 2021, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) hosted Hon. Wendy Morton, Minister for European Neighbourhood & the Americas at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office United Kingdom and Amb. Péter Sztáray, Minister of State for Security Policy at a roundtable discussion entitled Hungary and the UK: 100 years of bilateral relations and prospects for the future. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Márton Ugrósdy, Director of IFAT.

In her exposé, Hon. Wendy Morton expressed her appreciation of the enduring cordial relationship between the two countries, while Mr. Sztáray added that the present one might be a peak for bilateral relations in spite of the difficulties emanating from Brexit. Through a series of current issues, from coronavirus response to post-brexit student mobility, the present challenges of those bilateral relations were discussed. During the conversation, the general dynamics of a post-Brexit Britain, the similarities of approach between the two governments, and the future direction of the European Union without the UK were also addressed.

It was our pleasure to welcome Ms. Morton and Mr. Sztáray in our Institute. We believe that the roundtable discussion was an important milestone in maintaining our dialogue and strengthening the partnership between the United Kingdom and Hungary.
