In the spring of 2022, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) organized a series of events entitled Front Lines of the Global Technological War. Discussions in the series revolved around the question of how the competition between China and the West stands in various high-tech fields, what are the main characteristics of the competition, what strategies are the actors following and what are the prospects. As part of the series, an online roundtable discussion entitled “Race between China and the West in the fields of telecommunications and 5G networks” took place on April 20, 2022. The event was attended by Ferenc Bánhidi, a telecommunications expert and guest researcher at the Research Group for Modern East Asia at Pázmány Péter Catholic University, and Attila Endre Simay, an assistant professor at the Marketing Institute of Budapest Corvinus University. The moderator was Gergely Salát, senior research fellow at IFAT.
Participants emphasized that 5G, which is considered to be a key technology of the future, is the area where China is clearly at the forefront of the world, and according to plans 87% of the country’s territory will be covered by 5G networks this year. In terms of technological development, Huawei and ZTE also stand out, their main rivals are Nokia and Ericcson. Many US allies prohibit the use of Chinese hardware, but in most of the Third World, Chinese companies can expand without hindrance. In the European Union, the spread of 5G is encouraged by an action plan, but the EU leaves the consideration of security risks to the member states. In the field of 5G and other high-tech communication methods, fierce competition can be expected in the future, in which political and security aspects will play an important role in addition to economic ones.
