The Key role of Morocco in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges

On February 28, 2023 the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) held a public lecture in English under the title The Key role of Morocco in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges, hosting Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Gain, Professor of Postcolonial Studies at Ibn Tofail University and fellow at the Washington-based Middle East Institute. After Dr. Gain’s lecture, a discussion moderated by Tamás Baranyi, Deputy Director of IFAT, and a Q&A session followed. The professor explained in his exposé the uniqueness of Morocco on the African continent emanating from her geographical position, the multicultural society of the country and its multivectoral policies, as well as its attitude towards the political issues of the continent and Europe. He touched on the issue of Morocco’s constructive position on migration and the maintenance of stability, as well as the ongoing Sahrawi conflict, the autonomy plan put forward by Morocco, and its reception in European countries. In the audience, Hungarian and Moroccan students inquired about exchange programmes, while the diplomatic corps had questions about matters related to the African Union.
