China’s Policies in the Global South

On June 27, 2023, the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) hosted Dr. Dominik Mierzejewski, chairman of the Center for Asian Affairs and professor of the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Lodz, who held a public lecture entitled „China’s Policies in the Global South”. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Viktor Eszterhai, director of research at HIIA.

Professor Mierzejewski has presented China’s modus operandi in the developing world from the perspective of the Chinese domestic governance model. He has identified mobilization through slogan politics, the use of informal networks, and centrally coordinated cross-regional integration projects as mechanisms that characterize both domestic relations and China-led multilateralism. The lecture has highlighted the linkages between domestic and foreign politics, underlining the necessity of adopting the concept of vertical multilateralism in other to gain a better understanding of China’s behaviour in the Global South.
