Viktor Eszterhai obtained his PhD degree in 2018 at the Eötvös Loránd University Modern and Contemporary History Doctoral Program. He holds an MA in History and Geography, and a BA in Psychology. Between 2014 and 2015 he was a visiting senior researcher at the Department of International Relations, Tsinghua University, under the joint intergovernmental scholarship program of the Balassi Institute and the Chinese Government Scholarship Council. In 2017 he spent one month in Shanghai as a visiting scholar at Fudan Development Institute, Fudan University. Between July 2015 and January 2021 he was a senior researcher at the Pallas Athene Geopolitical Research Institute. Between September 2019 and January 2021 he worked as assistant professor at the Institute of Geography, Geoeconomy and Sustainable Development, Corvinus University of Budapest.

Since January 2021 he is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade. From 2023 he is the Research Director of the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA).
