As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to define political discourses in the Western Balkans, the economic consequences are becoming more visible. The race for vaccines, combined with a relatively low level of vaccinated population, and the first signs of a looming global economic crisis (i.e. high energy prices and inflation) create tremendous challenges for the entire region. In the meantime, the phenomena of nearshoring (and reshoring) can partially and potentially mitigate the negative (economic) impacts of the pandemic and create new chances for economic growth. The EU must embrace this window of opportunity to boost economic performance in the Western Balkans.
