Press Release of the Government Information Center

In the 2020s, Hungary entered the era of danger, so understanding the transformation of the world has never been as important as it is nowadays. The war next door, the reemergence of bloc thinking, and Hungary’s international visibility make it necessary to strengthen national interest-based foreign policy thinking and to develop the intellectual background that can provide effective answers to the challenges that await us. Thus, the Government decided to renew and strengthen the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade, which is 50 years old this year: in the future, in order to maintain organizational flexibility, it will continue its activities in a renewed organizational form, gradually doubling the number of researchers. Thanks to its expanding resources, the Institute will be able to support and promote national interest-based foreign policy thinking with its advisory and analytical work even better than before, with the help of which Hungary can win the next decades as well. The name of the institution will also change, but as the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs, it will continue to be available to the press and the domestic and international professional community.

In order to strengthen the strategic-planning nature of the new tasks and to support the Prime Minister’s work on a day-to-day basis, the supervision of the Institute will be transferred to the Prime Minister’s direct work organization, to the Prime Minister’s political director. However, cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will remain close.
