Hungary’s message on Sweden’s NATO accession is clear: the Hungarian government considers it important to strengthen NATO, but expects mutual respect from all old and new allies, and supports regular political consultation within the alliance. This is why the Hungarian side has invited the Swedish prime minister to Budapest, whose visit is expected to pave the way for the adoption of Swedish accession by the Hungarian Parliament. While Hungary’s position has been criticized as a needless slow-walking of the accession, Hungary’s strategy has ensured a stronger NATO and also achieved important results for its own national interests.
