On 10 June 2024, the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Quo vadis, Europe? Assessing the EP Elections”.
At the event, Péter Dobrowiecki, Head of Research at the Hungarian-German Institute of the Mathias Corvinus Collegium, and Gergely Fejérdy, Senior Research Fellow at HIIA, shared their insights on the shifting political balance in Europe. The discussion was moderated by HIIA’s Senior Research Fellow, Péter Stepper.
During the discussion, Dobrowiecki noted that “The weakness of the major Western European states doesn’t automatically mean that Central Europe will gain more influence in European affairs.”
Fejérdy emphasized that while in 2019 the green transition was the main direction of EU policy, this approach now needs to be reconsidered. “The right will be able to rally more broadly around such issues, which will bring changes in European politics. It will also be in the European People’s Party’s interest to give greater space to right-wing ideas, as that’s the only way it can secure wider support.”
