IFAT senior research fellow Gergely Varga participated in an online webinar organized by the Vice-Consulate of Hungary in Houston. The discussion focused on Transatlantic relations and US-Hunagrian relations in light of the result of the US presidential election. The speakers of the event alongside Gergely Varga were Molly O’Neal frrom the University of Texas, Gabriela Marin Thornton from th Bush School of Government and Public Service and Péter Stepper of the Antall József Knowledge Centre in Budapest. The speakers highlighted the likely continuing close relationship in the security and economic field between the US and Central European. However, all speakers pointed out that there will be likely more tension in the political relationship on matters related to rule of law and democracy. At the same time, the Biden administration will have an interest in maintaining a working relationship also with the government of Poland and Hungary in order to US geopolitical interests in the region.
