On 3 May 2022, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade hosted an online roundtable discussion titled Electromobility and great power rivalry. Mr. András Balogh and Mr.Tamás Novák, science and technology attachés in Beijing and New York and Mr. András Kéri, advisory manager at PwC participated as panellists.

Over course of the event it was explicated that the infrastructure of electric vehicles is more developed in China, however, a clear overall ranking in the development level of electromobility could not be set up among major powers. As Tesla is a US-based company, the most cutting-edge technology of the industry is still linked to the United States while the sector and the market expands at an accelerating pace in the country. At the same time in China the everyday use of latest technologies spread faster today than in the USA. In China the state has a dominant role in economic development, therefore we are witnessing a competition of two different models in the evolution of the electric vehicle industry as well. However, innovation and investment decisions are not driven purely by implications of great power rivalry but also largely by business considerations both in China and the USA.
