The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) held a roundtable discussion on April 27, 2021 entitled „Meanings of the Indo-Pacific Concept – Regional Outlooks”. Different views about the Indo-Pacific region were represented by Mr. Wondeuk Cho, senior researcher at the Institute for Foreign Affairs and National Security (Republic of Korea); Ms. Kyoko Hatakeyama, Professor of University of Niigata Prefecture (Japan), and Ms. Huong Le Thu, senior analyst from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (Australia). The event was moderated by Tamás Péter Baranyi, Deputy Director for Strategy of IFAT.
Mr. Cho talked about South Korea’s New Southern Policy as a primary example of the region’s evolving strategic culture and foreign policy initiatives, while Ms. Hatakeyama explained how the Free and Open Indo-Pacific Concept (FOIP) is more confrontational in a U.S. perspective, while more inclusive in a Japanese view. Ms. Le Thu shed light on the Australian perspective as one of the rich countries of the region who really feel the lack of guarantees of rules-based order.
For questions of the audience, our guests discussed to what extent is „a new cold war” a misleading term for the increased great power rivalry in the Pacific region.
