Researchers of the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT), Péter Wagner, Péter Stepper and Tamás Levente Molnár held an online panel discussion on NATO’s Madrid Summit, evaluating the decisions made and their backgrounds.
According to Péter Wagner, a senior research fellow at IFAT, bolstering NATO’s eastern flank was the most decisive decision of the summit. Péter Stepper, a senior research fellow of the institute, highlighted two issues: the settlement of the political dispute around Turkey’s veto, and the shifting focus towards China embodied in NATO’s Strategic Concept document.
IFAT’s researchers presented NATO’s new Strategic Concept adopted by the member states, emphasizing that the organization clearly identified Russia as its biggest adversary. The speakers also discussed the Swedish and Finnish NATO accession and its security policy implications for the European security architecture. Finally, concerning the war in Ukraine, the military, economic and humanitarian support of Western countries to Ukraine was discussed, also mentioning the various positions Western countries have taken vis-à-vis Russia.
The event was moderated by Tamás Levente Molnár, a research fellow at IFAT.
