Hungary and China – a multidimensional relationship

This year marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungary and the People’s Republic of China, and the importance of the anniversary is highlighted by the visit of Chinese president and premier Xi Jinping to Hungary. In recent years, economic developments have been the most significant feature of Sino-Hungarian relations, with China becoming one of the major investors in Hungary, while it has been Hungary’s largest trading partner outside the EU for many years. Political relations are also particularly good: Hungarian-Chinese relations are closer than ever. At the same time, it is important to underline that these relations are not limited to the economic and political spheres, as Hungarian-Chinese cooperation has many dimensions which have been built up over many decades in a wide range of fields. Attention should also be called to the difficulties and challenges that could slow down the further deepening of relations.
