Started in 2007, suspended in 2013, and resumed in 2022, the EU-India free trade agreement (FTA) talks may finally conclude in 2025—or so the leaders’ joint statement in February 2025 suggests. Divergences in areas like agriculture, services, and intellectual property have long hindered negotiations, but in the rapidly changing geopolitical environment of the early 2020s, both the European Union and India see each other as more desirable partners than ever before. Reaching a truly meaningful, “deep” FTA remains challenging, but Hungarian businesses could benefit from both direct exports to India and participation in value chains running through Germany’s export-oriented manufacturing base.
