This policy brief attempts to outline some of the main goals and challenges shaping energy policy in Hungary. After providing an overview of the Hungarian energy mix, it examines three strategic energy policy challenges in detail. These are Hungary’s dependence on (primarily Russian) energy imports, the role of nuclear energy in light of the Paks project, along with the impacts of climate change over the long-term. Finally, the brief looks at the specific security-related concerns raised by these dilemmas, ranging from the geopolitical dynamics of Central Europe to the emergence of new security concerns, such as the cyber security of critical energy infrastructure.
