Negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom concerning the latter’s withdrawal from the former have been staggering ever since the clock of the 2-year deadline started ticking in March 2017. The purpose of this paper is to identify and briefly analyze the key factors behind the lengthy negotiation process. The paper intends to find such key factors on both the EU and the UK’s side, from a legal as well as a political perspective. The paper concludes that while a member state’s departure from the EU is unprecedented, the most important complexities of Brexit, the ones that hinder the negotiations the most, come from inside the British political environment.
