He is a Co-Chair of the Research Committee on Geopolitics at the International Political Science Association.
At the event, Igor Okunev presented the activities and professional aspirations of the research center he headed and the status of political geography in MGIMO’s training system. From what has been said, it is clear that the university pays special attention to this field of science and supports related new and innovative research. All of this is aided by the new textbook Political Geography (was published with Peter Lang Group), a handbook authored by the speaker, which has received a positive international response through its publication in English.
In the speaker’s view, very positive changes can be observed in political geography, with a particular development of the related research methodology, which will be complemented by the emergence of new data. The MGIMO research center also carries out the application of new research methods and the development of new research methods. The process is also aided by the fact that there is a need for such new knowledge on the part of decision-makers in international relations.
In the next part of the presentation, the speaker presented the application of the research methods and the potentially new knowledge elements that can be obtained through the example of analysis of the data on the Visegrád Group and the region. In connection with this, it turned out that the collection and systematization of relevant data will be a key issue for the development of the discipline. It seems clear that the interest to the links between political geography and international relations are now re-emerging in Russia and in many other countries around the world, especially due to developments in new data and methodologies.
Through their comments and questions, the researchers of the Institute contributed to the further elaboration of the above topics.
