After Twenty-Seven Months of War, Ukraine Needs Peace
MKI REPORT
The Russo-Ukrainian war has been going on for almost two and a half years and has brought death and devastation to Ukraine. Militarily, Ukraine no longer has a clear advantage, and Western aid has become increasingly delayed. Given the state of devastation and the hopelessness of the war effort, the war must be ended. Fundamentally, however, there are markedly different views on what constitutes an acceptable end to the war, with the Ukrainian people increasingly in favor of handing over some territories while the government and many of its backers continue to oppose a compromise. Foreign support is only encouraging Kyiv to continue fighting a losing battle, further destroying its infrastructure and killing off its male population, all on credit. Even if a peace deal is reached, though, there will remain challenges to maintaining stability in the region. The West must be careful in its handling of the situation, as a frustrated Ukraine, with a militant society potentially disillusioned and even resentful towards the West, is not something the West, particularly the EU, is prepared for.
