On March 31, 2025, the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) had the pleasure of hosting Adam Lovinger, Visiting Fellow at HIIA, for a closed discussion entitled “Understanding the USA’s New Strategic Standpoint”. The discussion was moderated by Tamás Baranyi, Director for Strategy at HIIA.

Mr. Lovinger stated that the transatlantic alliance is undergoing a significant transformation, driven in part by shifts in U.S. political sentiment and evolving global dynamics. Although former President Trump’s approach may appear disruptive, there is considerable continuity in American foreign policy—albeit with a more sophisticated understanding of Washington. Increasingly, Americans—traditionally indifferent to foreign affairs—are growing more engaged, especially in questioning the financial burden the U.S. bears in conflicts like the Ukraine war and the broader NATO alliance, particularly when Europe is seen as wealthy but under-contributing.
