On 14 December 2020, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade organized an online memorial conference on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Hungary’s accession to the UN. The event was opened by Péter Sztáray, Hungarian State Secretary for Security Policy, reviewing the priorities of Hungary’s current main areas of activity in the UN. Following the State Secretary’s greeting, our invited guest speakers, UN Ambassador Katalin Bogyay, University Professor and former Chief of Defence of Hungary Zoltán Szenes, and Mihály Simai, President of the Hungarian UN Society, gave a presentation moderated by Gergely Varga, IFAT Senior Research Fellow. The event focused on the Hungarian diplomatic successes of the past decades at the UN and to the fact that multilateralism and multilateral institutions continue to be important in Hungary’s international advocacy. Hungary’s role in UN peace missions was mentioned as well. Looking at the future, there was a consensus that a long-term strategy is needed to strengthen our role in the UN and in order to obtain certain positions.
