During Donald Trump’s first presidency, he launched a trade war against China and promised that his second administration would also implement radical measures to keep Chinese competition away from the American market. He appointed politicians known as ’hawks’ on China to key trade-related positions, ensuring political consensus within the administration on confronting China. The Trump administration could use various tools, ranging from punitive tariffs to expanding technology embargoes and restricting Chinese investments. On the other hand, China has also prepared for another Trump era, with Beijing ready to deploy a wide range of countermeasures. While it is impossible to predict the exact steps the United States will take or how China will specifically respond, one thing seems certain: trade conflicts between the two superpowers are likely to deepen.
