dr. Ákos Mernyei, a legal expert, graduated in 2009 from the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at Eötvös Loránd University. He pursued part of his studies in Belgium at Universiteit Gent. During his academic years, he was twice awarded the “Top of the Class” distinction and received the “Republican Scholarship” three times. For his scientific contributions, he was honored with a special award from the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and received the Hajnóczy Award from the Faculty.
He began his career at international law firms, later becoming a scholarship recipient of the European Commission in Brussels, where he worked on infringement procedures. Upon returning to Hungary, he served in government as head of department and then as Deputy State Secretary responsible for EU and international relations, followed by a role as ministerial commissioner under the Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office. From the end of 2022, he served for a year as the Director-General for International Affairs at the National University of Public Service, and in March 2024, he was appointed as Ambassador-at-Large. Since early 2024, he has been working with the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs as an ambassador and presidential advisor.
Ákos Mernyei speaks English and German and, in addition to his law degree, holds a legal-economist qualification from Corvinus University of Budapest (2021).
